Criminal Minds season 15: Matthew Gray Gubler on Reid, JJ moment

Spencer Reid Criminal Minds

As we sit in the middle of this Criminal Minds hiatus, we have questions aplenty about the final season. Some are about UnSubs, some are about the return of Big Bad Everett Lynch, and a lot are about whatever comes next with Spencer and JJ.

If you recall (and you probably do), JJ confessed to Reid in a moment of vulnerability that she “always loved him” in the finale. It was a way to try to keep them safe from an UnSub, but in the aftermath of the confession it felt like there may have been some truth to it. We know that JJ’s a good liar, but was she lying in that context? Whatever comes next is going to be opening up a real Pandora’s Box of emotions, especially since JJ is married and we haven’t gotten a sense that she has romantic feelings for Reid at any point in the past decade-plus.

We know that for showrunner Erica Messer, she wanted fans to be unsure as to what JJ actually felt at the time in which the finale aired. As it turns out, Matthew Gray Gubler feels the same way. In a new Reddit AMA promoting his new book Rumple Buttercup, he explained that he was hoping for some ambiguity among fans following that moment:

“[My] hope when we shot that scene where Reid asks her if she was lying or not, that 50 percent of the audience felt one way and 50 parent felt the other.”

One thing to consider here is this: Is it possible that JJ was telling the truth, but not necessarily in a romantic-love sort of way? She’s claimed that she’s always loved Reid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she wants to be with him or wreck her marriage. This could be a love that stems from a different part of her heart. It could still be romantic love at all, but we don’t quite know exactly how the writers are getting themselves out of this situation. It’s by far one of the most polarizing twists in show history, mostly because there are so many fans out there who appreciate the friendship between these characters. It speaks to something that we don’t really see on television all that often.

No matter where you land in terms of the Reid – JJ debate, there is one thing in which you may agree — having to sit around and wait for answers is not going to be easy. The show’s currently in production and we hope they will be back on the air this fall.
