Shadowhunters season 3 episode 17 video: Alec prepares for a proposal
Consider the latest sneak preview below courtesy of Freeform the writers setting the table for what the proposal could look like, including a romantic setting under the stars with some of the chef’s finest cuisine. Alec wants this to be perfect, largely because he wants this to be one of the most beautiful and epic moments of his entire life. He’s ready for the showers of romance to come down and for Magnus to feel every single thing that Alec feels about him. This is a cause for cartwheels, fireworks, and merriment that you don’t see on this show every week.

So is there any reason for pause? Should we step on the brakes for at least a second here? The main reason in which to do this is because within the world of television, proposals rarely ever go according to plan. If they did, the general consensus is that things would be a bit boring. There is something perennially satisfying about getting what you want, but actually getting it in a way in which you do not expect. Let’s frame things in this sense when it comes to Alec and Magnus — maybe you do have a chance to see the two of them get engaged, but not in this particular setting. Maybe something happens around the Institute that renders Alec indisposed, or something transpires with Magnus so that he is not able to make that dinner. We firmly believe that the proposal is going to happen, mostly because it would be a little bit weird to not see it when you think about all of the hype. (The idea of the Shadowhunters writers going this far with the proposal and not going all the way is almost mind-numbing … and the sort of thing that would leave most fans shouting at the heavens.)
Whenever the proposal does happen, whether it be during this episode or some other people down the line, there is another question worth wondering, as well: When’s the wedding? What’s going to happen after this big moment? We don’t think for a second that the producers would end this season without the two tying the knot, as they understand how important these characters are … and they’re really at the point already would they feel ready for marriage.
