Outlander season 5: More from Sam Heughan, cast at first table read

Outlander

This is a delightful time in the Outlander universe. After all, after a great deal of time waiting, the cast has been assembled like the Avengers and work is beginning to make the newest chapter in this epic journey as successful as possible.

As you may very well know, yesterday was the first official read-through of the new season, which involves various cast members coming together, reading out some of the lines together, and really getting a sense of some of the first rhythms of the script and where the story is going. It’s a traditional thing for many shows to do, but there is also a great production benefit since it just means something valuable to have everyone collectively in the same place, communicating and in character once more after a break.

For our video take on the read-through, be sure to watch the video at the bottom of this article! After you check that out, remember to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more, and be sure to also view our Outlander playlist so you don’t miss any other updates.

For fans, obviously the table read a thrill since it’s one of those few in-season occasions that can be shared and teased on social media without anything being given away. Unless someone goes completely rogue and starts photographing scripts, it’s easy to show pictures of either people in attendance or at least script covers. Some of that we shared in our report on it yesterday, but there are also a few odds/ends we didn’t see then that we’d love to point out today.

1. Sam Heughan’s producer acknowledgment – Every person sitting at a table read has a tiny slip of paper on it with their name and their role on the show, really almost like it’s Comic-Con. It’s always funny, given that like Comic-Con these slips are completely unnecessary for almost everyone in attendance. Yet, if you go over to Sam’s Instagram Stories you can see his reads producer / cast — while we’re certainly aware that these slips cost about a penny to make and almost anyone can do it, there’s still something cool in just seeing Sam’s name as producer typed out. He and Caitriona Balfe both have the role now, an acknowledgement of their significance to the show and their influence in all aspects of it. They now have more power and input on the overall direction of the show than before!

2. Then, there’s Duncan LaCroix – Well, maybe Duncan’s slip of paper doesn’t have the same luster to it, mostly because his last name is spelled “La Croix” on it. Also, what’s with the “3” that’s wedged in there? Check it out via Instagram below.

What we’re perhaps just most excited about for Duncan this year is actually getting to hear from him at all. Remember that for the better part of season 4, the man was basically forced to be a social-media ghost on all things Outlander. Now, the fact that Murtagh is alive and around the Fraser’s isn’t thought of as some sort of world-shattering spoiler. He’s just a natural part of that family … even if Jamie’s been ordered to track him down by Governor Tryon. That’s the cliffhanger we’re dealing with at the moment, folks!

We’ll continue to have more Outlander season 5 news throughout production, so be sure to check back! We have new updates just about every day. (Photo: Starz.)
