This Is Us season 4 renewal hopes, premiere date speculation

This Is Us season 2

Within this article, CarterMatt is here to talk about anything and everything related to This Is Us season 4, starting off with this — the fact that it shockingly hasn’t been renewed yet.

What gives with that? Are the folks over at NBC somehow disinterested in giving one of their biggest hits all the love possible? We don’t think of it as a slight; instead, it’s more of a function of the show not being an in-house production and because of that, things have a tendency to take a little bit more time. That’s even more the case here when you consider that This Is Us is a production of 20th Century Fox TV, which was recently acquired by Disney. When you’ve got this many moving parts behind the scenes for a show, there may be a prevailing sentiment in which the studio executives pumped the brakes until everything with the shake-up could be resolved.

Now that it has, the serious discussions can begin anew — and, for the record, we envision that this show could easily get another two-season renewal like it did all the way back in the first season. There’s no reason to think that NBC will want to end it given that it’s a ratings monster, it performs very well via DVR, and it’s one of the few network TV projects that actually is the subject of awards-show attention. What’s perhaps even more incredible is that it’s been able to do all of this without having some sort of hugely ambitious premise. This is really just a show about family. While there may be a lot of flashbacks / flash-forwards, there are no special effects. Almost every single aspect of this show is based on realism and the emotional bonds that bring everyone together.

Since we’re not seriously concerned about its renewal future, let’s shift now instead to the other key question — when could season 4 premiere? The most likely answer to that is at some point this fall in one of the final weeks of September in the same exact timeslot. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — and the timeslot for This Is Us is far from broke. It’s flourished in this spot, in addition to serving as a great lead-in for some other shows along the way. Just ask New Amsterdam or Chicago Med how much they’ve appreciated airing after this show over time.

We can make the same argument when it comes to episode count — This Is Us works fine with 18 episodes a season, so we don’t really foresee there being all that much of an interest in trying to extend past that up to the “typical” network order of 22 episodes. 18 works great since it keeps certain stories being overly stretched out and beyond that, it actually gives the cast a chance to do some other things during the hiatus.

What do we want to see on season 4?

We’ll get more into this down the line (we don’t want to spoil anything now!), but one question we certainly have is how much more the show is going to be able to use Milo Ventimiglia? Since Jack is dead in the present, there’s no real use for him there. Meanwhile, it feels like so many big stories from his past have already been covered. While we love the actor so much, there is a time to let him go and we may have hit that mark.
