Magnum PI season 2 premiere date hopes for Jay Hernandez, cast

Following tonight’s finale, do you want to get some early news about a possible Magnum PI season 2 premiere date? If so, CarterMatt has some discussion on that and a whole lot more within this article!

Let’s start things off here with a reminder of some very good news that the Jay Hernandez-led remake has, officially, been renewed for a second season already. This actually happened all the way back when the show was in production, and it was a nice stamp of approval from CBS to a show that’s had a somewhat up-and-down first season in the ratings. While it’s averaging a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the season, that number is somewhat inflated by a post-AFC Championship airing on CBS a little bit earlier this year. It’s been held back by having to air following a dissimilar lead-in courtesy of some comedies, and also some heavy competition elsewhere — think in terms of reality shows on ABC/NBC plus also 911 over on Fox. It’s a pretty crowded landscape, but Thomas Magnum has carved out a nice little niche for himself on this network. This show isn’t an enormous, runaway hit, but it’s doing enough to come back for another kick of the can.

The performance of Magnum PI in its current timeslot does raise some questions as to what CBS is going to do with it moving into season 2. Will they opt to move it into the 10:00 p.m. timeslot currently occupied by Bull? Depending on what happens with that show, we certainly think that this is a possibility. Another one is moving the show to Wednesdays and giving it the 9:00 p.m. timeslot, pairing it with SEAL Team at 10:00. Moving the show to Fridays is also a possibility, but where would it fit there given that this lineup’s been very much cemented for the past several years?

We have obvious questions as to when Magnum PI could return and we suspect that it will come back in the fall, but the best bit of advice we can give this show and the writers is to keep doing what they’re doing and build on these characters and their stories. We think that the relationship between Magnum and Higgins has been somewhat of a highlight this season, as has seeing some of the dynamics fleshed-out with Rick, TC, and some of the people who are turning up in their lives. There’s a nice core group of characters now and over the summer, the creative team can find out more ways to build on them and understand more of what makes them all individually tick. Beyond that, obviously there’s a whole perfect-world scenario in which Tom Selleck makes some sort of cameo appearance, but we have a hard time imagining that’s possible given that he’s filming Blue Bloods at roughly the same time on the other side of the country.
