Legacies season 2 spoilers: What Vampire Diaries / Originals characters could appear?

If you want to look at Legacies season 1 using business terms, you could almost call it a proof-of-concept. Throughout the past 16 episodes, you’ve gotten a chance to see that this show can exist separately from both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. While we certainly loved some of the cameos that we got, we also realized that this was a show that didn’t actually need them in order to succeed.

Now that we are at this point, though, we do think the show actually has more of an opportunity to bring some known names from those two shows on board! It would feel more like a fun Easter egg for longtime fans than desperate stunt casting for the sake of helping this show survive the early days, and there are obviously a LOT of different possibilities out there. The obvious one is Candice King as Caroline given the obvious connections between her and some other characters, but nothing is guaranteed as of yet.

For now, all executive producer Julie Plec would say (via TV Guide) are some of the people she would LIKE to see moving forward, as opposed to who may actually be coming up:

there’s plenty of people I’d love to see. I’d love to see Bonnie (Kat Graham). I’d love to see Caroline obviously. I’d love to see Freya (Riley Voelkel) and Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) and Auntie Rebekah (Claire Holt). … The door is always open, and it’s just really a matter of being able to match up interest from these actors and story opportunity at the right time.”

While we think all of these actors have devoted followings who would love to see them back as these characters, we do understand why there’s sometimes resistance to people being brought back. A part of it is tied to the simple fact that a lot of these people have some other important stuff going on in their lives. It’s also hard given that Legacies films in Atlanta and a lot of these people are based in some other parts of the country. There’s also that fear of being known for only one character and people do want to sometimes move on and try out new characters.

Our thinking on this subject is simply this: It’s cool to be known for other parts, but if the story is right and you’ve got a hole in your schedule, why not find a way to make another appearance work? Caroline’s an obvious person who you wouldn’t have to move heaven and earth for story-wise, and we know that Plec and the writers already set the stage for Kai (Chris Wood) to come back because of what happened with Lizzie and Josie at the end of season 1 … but there’s no guarantee that he actually will.
