Agents of SHIELD season 6: Lou Diamond Phillips directing!

Agents of SHIELD

How about this for another reason to be excited for Agents of SHIELD season 6 this summer? Not only are you going to see a new character from Clark Gregg and some more exciting superhero action, but Lou Diamond Phillips is going to direct an episode! The former Longmire star got a chance to reunite with his SGU Stargate Universe colleague Ming-Na Wen, and he also had an opportunity to be a part of one of the most exciting brands out there. When Marvel calls, you answer — that’s just a rule you try to answer if at all possible.

Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what Phillips himself had to say about taking on the gig:

“I got the call when I was directing Fear of the Walking Dead down in Austin: ‘Would you direct an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?’ ‘Yeah, done.’ Instant answer, because of the world, because it’s Marvel. It’s big. It’s comic-book stuff. It’s action. It’s mythology. It’s science-fiction. It’s all of that rolled into one … And of course my old friend Ming-Na was on it. That’s crazy, that’s wonderful!”

Of course, trying to find out the story of Phillips’ upcoming Agents of SHIELD episode is a little more of a challenge, mostly because there’s no real incentive for anyone at the comic company or ABC to give something away. Even though filming’s been done on this season for months, they’re keeping their cards close to the vest, knowing that they’ve got a large pool of viewers who will be ready to see it and behold all of its excellence when it comes out a little bit later this summer.

Wouldn’t it also be nice to see Lou come on board Agents of SHIELD as an actor? Absolutely it would, but the guy is admittedly rather busy these days! Just look at the schedule — he’s appeared in multiple episodes of Blue Bloods this season as Danny’s rival Luis Delgado and beyond that, he’s also got a new pilot in Prodigal Son that could end up getting ordered to series. Then, you’ve got that aforementioned Fear the Walking Dead directorial gig and we have to think that this is something that could be available to him again at some point.

We anticipate that ABC will announce their Agents of SHIELD season 6 premiere date at some point in the coming weeks; given that some rival networks including NBC and CBS are already doing this very thing, there’s no real incentive for them to keep quiet about it forever. You gotta get some of that buzz going to make sure this show is as successful as it really should be! (We know that the ratings haven’t been great in years, but there is more opportunity coming in the summer.)
