Is Supernatural new tonight on The CW? The path to what’s next
The unfortunate news is that we’re going to be without a new episode of the Jared Padalecki – Jensen Ackles series tonight. The good news? There’s a chance to relive the 300th episode “Lebanon,” as that one is airing tonight on the show’s standard timeslot. Over the course of that installment you of course see Jeffrey Dean Morgan back as John Winchester, and in so many ways we actually think that this episode was an impetus in helping the cast and producers feel a little more okay with ending the show after the upcoming fifteenth season. With John comes a sense of closure, and we think the brothers Winchester needed that to feel a little more whole.

When Supernatural does return, you will have a chance to dive into four more episodes this season starting with next week’s “Game Night” — these should help to lay the foundation for that final season, or at least get us on the road emotionally to be prepared for them. We don’t believe that the decision was made on the end of the road at the time the finale was written, but there may have been discussions; beyond just that, the creative team here has likely been aware that we are inching closer to dropping the curtain on the show as a whole.
While it’s great to recognize that all of that is coming, we don’t want to think so far ahead that you miss out on what’s in front of you, either. This is going to be part of the joy of the next few episodes — while there may be some greater mythology-building, we’re also anticipating some classic Supernatural elements. Think creative monsters, fun moments, and plenty of humor from start to finish. This show should offer us opportunities aplenty to laugh, but also multiple kicks in the feels at the same. We think we know Supernatural well enough at this point to know how capable they are to hit us on a multiple of fronts — and for us to continue to enjoy this topsy-turvy journey as a viewer. There isn’t too much info out there just yet on how the finale will wrap up for this season, but we’re expecting some sort of cliffhanger. The only time that we may not have one is in the series finale, mostly because we think the team would like for us to feel like Sam and Dean’s journey is over — at least for now — in a satisfying way.
We saw “for now” as a clear reminder of this — even if this show comes to a close, we think that there will be a continued legacy — and there’s always a chance at something more down the road if everyone wants. We’ll continue believing that until someone says otherwise.
