Supernatural season 14 episode 15 preview: Life without Michael
The reaction to this (at least based on what we’ve seen) is mixed to say the least. There are some rejoicing in the idea of Supernatural getting to do something new to close out the 20-episode season. Others feel like it was almost too easy to write him off in the way it happened — remember, the episode before last night’s was the big 300th with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Then Michael popped back up out of nowhere and then disappeared a la a magic trick.
We fall somewhere in the middle with our thinking on the subject, not that we’re trying to just ride the fence. There is a part of our brain here that is firmly within the “this is far too easy” camp, but at the same time, there’s also a part of us that’s just happy to get the Michael storyline over and done with. Other than getting to see Jensen Ackles take on a different character (which was, admittedly, quite awesome), we didn’t find a lot of appeal here. We would’ve rather the writers just have Michael in Dean’s body for a little bit longer at the start of the season, and then just wrapped it up earlier rather than putting him back in that position later. We now have only six more episodes and within these, we are going to see what direction are the writers going to go next.
There are some elements (note the word: some) of a classic monster-of-the-week episode next week in “Peace of Mind.” There’s something perennially appealing to us about seeing one of the hunters visiting a town where everything seems fine, only for things to be not fine where all hell breaks loose. Then, by the end of the episode someone almost dies but the heroes travel on the next place.
The Supernatural season 14 episode 15 synopsis that CarterMatt has for you below gives you a small sense of what makes this one a little different from the norm:
PLEASANTVLLE – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) follow a case to a picturesque little town in Arkansas, only to find out nothing is as idyllic as it appears to be. Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Jack (Alexander Calvert) take a road trip to visit an old friend. The episode was directed by Phil Sgriccia and written by Meghan Fitzmartin and Steve Yockey with teleplay by Meghan Fitzmartin.
Obviously, having Sam and Castiel undercover as FBI is a little different from the classic Sam/Dean mission doing the same thing — Castiel, for all of his years of experience, doesn’t have the same vibe. Amidst whatever chaos that erupts, it’s probably going to be funny seeing these two bob and weave through this bizarre community, almost thrust right out of the 1950’s. There will be monsters. There will be laughs. There will be reminders about what we loved about Supernatural in the first place.
