Call the Midwife season 8 finale video: What will Valerie do?
Before we dive in here, let’s start with a refresher: Valerie’s own gran has been running a backstreet abortion clinic, one that uses some absolutely horrendous practices under the purported guise of helping mothers. What happens at the result of this is sometimes horrifying, and we saw a lot of that play out at the end of this past episode. It left Valerie shaken, and also unsure as to precisely what to do. Valerie’s gran knows what she is doing, at least in the sense of knowing how to keep law enforcement at bay. She’s been doing this a long time clearly; we don’t think that she is some emotionless sociopath, so she’s clearly found a way to do this where none of it really gets to her anymore.
In the sneak peek below, you can see the trauma that it’s left in Valerie’s heart. She is suffering — everything still feeds so dep and raw to her and she’s trying to figure out precisely how she is going to be able to move past what she saw and the things that she experienced. She can’t sleep, which is why she’s up in the middle of the night — Trixie speaks to her, and makes it clear what their next course of action needs to be. They need to speak with Sister Julienne and beyond that, they need to speak to the police. We do think that Trixie has sympathy for Valerie, though this is clearly a different situation for her than it is for Trixie. It’s still someone within her family and while she may loathe the acts being committed, it doesn’t change who her gran is to her. This is not going to be easy, and she will need a tremendous amount of love and support.
Luckily, we know that Valerie will have that — there are few places quite as supportive as Nonnatus when it comes to the midwives and sisters helping each other … though they may have some ideological differences along the way.
What else can you expect on the Call the Midwife season 8 finale?
The biggest thing worth teasing right now is an important conversation between Reggie and Fred — Reggie’s going to be exhibiting some rather-strange behavior patterns and within this story, we will see some conversations spawn from that. We certainly do hope all is well, mostly because we envision Reggie as one of the emotional hearts of this show. He’s the ultimate underdog, someone who has gone through quite a bit and found his way to the other side.
