The Masked Singer season 2 premiere date hopes: When could it return?

The Masked Singer

With tonight’s finale right around the corner, there’s really no time like the present to talk a little bit more about The Masked Singer season 2!

Check out our Masked Singer video at the bottom of the article with more of our season 2 expectations! That should give you some more perspective on where things currently stand, and if you subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTubeyou can get more discussions on the show! We even have a full The Masked Singer playlist to make life easier.

The natural starting off point in this article is reminding everyone that there will be a second season coming on Fox in the future! That was announced recently, but even if it wasn’t, we wouldn’t be on here sounding any cancellation alarms. Getting rid of this show would be arguably one of the dumbest things that any network could possibly do, mostly because the first iteration of The Masked Singer was such an obvious, runaway hit. This is a show that throughout its entire season posted a 2.0 rating or higher in the 18-49 demographic. The lowest rating it ever posted is a 2.2! This is a show drawing better ratings than either This Is Us or The Voice, shows considered to be ratings behemoths these days. We’re not sure that its popularity in the demo is being discussed enough — not bad, given that everyone online seemed to have most of the singers’ identities figured out weeks ago.

Here’s the tricky part about the show’s massive success: It does put Fox in a rather precarious position in terms of when to bring it back. Do you really want to wait until next January, and run the risk that some of the enthusiasm for the format is gone? It’s a risky move. The same could be said for rushing the second season and putting it on in the summer; you don’t want to give people too much of a good thing and give the show burn out. Viewers need to have time in order to miss it. We’d certainly advocate for keeping the seasons short (around nine episodes) and not bloat the show beyond an hour the majority of the time. A part of what makes this competition good is that you know it’s not around forever and it makes it more of appointment viewing television.

Fox will hopefully announce more on The Masked Singer season 2, in terms of a premiere date at least, over the next couple of months. Here are a few other important things that we would implore Fox to consider for next season:

1. Reducing the number of clues – It’s either that or making some clues less obvious. There are always going to be internet super-sleuths that figure out who people are pretty fast. There are other people, like Tommy Chong, who is obviously who they are the moment you hear them sing. Just don’t make it too easy, since the easy clues basically gave away LaToya Jackson and Joey Fatone. There may have been more mystery there otherwise and a finale unmasking of a complete unknown is exciting to us!

2. Keeping the guest judges – Getting people like Joel McHale or JB Smoove on the show proved to be incredibly smart! It gave the panel an outside perspective, which was needed so we didn’t keep hearing the same thoughts on a loop. (We never want to hear a contestant compared to a Destiny’s Child member ever again.)

3. Creative casting – What’s made people like the Monster and the Lion so great is that unless you’re either big fans of them or you’re spending a lot of time sleuthing around online, you probably weren’t able to figure them out right away. We want people with fantastic voices, but also not people with obvious voices. A part of the fun with The Masked Singer is learning about some surprising talent.
