When Calls the Heart season 6 episode 2 preview: Who is Lucas?
Now that the new season has officially kicked off, now comes the time for speculation and to wonder what lies straight ahead. Next week will mark the second episode of the season, and a chance to see and better understand one of the series’ big newcomers in Lucas. Who is he, precisely, and what is he looking to bring to Hope Valley? This episode could work to answer these questions … or possibly also raise some new ones. Both are interesting possibilities, but beyond just that, this is an episode that will continue to show advancements in society. Tonight, the writers offered up a celebration of the telephone; next week, it could be the stock market.

Bill (Jack Wagner) and Abigail (Lori Loughlin) are skeptical of Lucas (Chris McNally), a newcomer to Hope Valley. Bill investigates the mystery man with some help from a spy at the town’s new switchboard. At the schoolhouse, Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) teaches one of her students to find his confidence. Intrigued by the stock market, Abigail solicits Gowen’s (Martin Cummins) investment help. Meanwhile, Clara (Eva Bourne) applies for a job at the saloon.
For those wondering, signs point to Lucas being the mystery saloon buyer. Will he be that welcomed after he swooped in at the last minute to buy it?
The goal with just about every When Calls the Heart episode is working to combine a couple of elements. You do want to have a moralistic quality to it, one where you leave the story feeling as though you’ve learned or felt something. That is in some way the Hallmark tie-in, given that their greeting cards were always designed for the sake of drawing some a reaction, a smile, or a tear. Beyond just that, you do want to learn a little bit of something more about the characters. You want to understand better what makes them tick, or how they are handling the latest circumstances thrown at them.
When Calls the Heart is a show about grappling with change and feeling the love from your fellow community. No matter what happens, or who ends up arriving in Hope Valley, it is hard to envision that ever changing.
Ratings expectations…
In future When Calls the Heart updates, we will discuss in this place the series’ total performance. Given that this is the premiere and there are no official ratings yet, that’s a little more difficult. It’s slightly concerning that the premiere is airing opposite the Oscars; conversely, it is easy to have confidence in the future, as the Hallmark Channel is already devising a streaming spin-off and this is a flagship series for the network.
