A Million Little Things episode 17 (finale) spoilers: Say ‘Goodbye’

Million Little Things

Few shows can make you get misty-eyed with just an episode title, but A Million Little Things episode 17 (a.k.a. the finale) has that with “Goodbye.”

With this one, simple word, the ABC drama is echoing some of its larger themes of the entire season, including an attempt to establish closure following the death of Jon. This was the event that kickstarted the emotion and the twist-filled narrative at large; while we may not be seeing the end of the entire series next week, the writers may be opting to tie together one narrative while sending viewers down a new course. There is an awareness that with a series like this, the story cannot stay the same forever. With all matters of life and death, eventually characters start to move forward. Eventually, people try to figure out what is next in their lives. This is where some may be — trying to find a way for said wounds to heal, even though they may never do so fully. These are scars so much more than scabs, cuts, or bruises.

Still, there is another mystery at the core of this finale beyond just Jon’s death, and it involves one simple name: Barbara Morgan. How she factors into the finale is one of the show’s largest mysteries. With her, the writers are allowing you to take one small step backward, but then also an enormous step in a new direction.

Below, CarterMatt does offer the A Million Little Things episode 17 synopsis, which gives you some specific insight:

With questions still lingering around Jon’s death, his loved ones try to move on, each taking meaningful steps forward in their own lives. As most of them begin to accept that they may never get the explanation they desire, an unexpected member of the group decides to dig even further into the mystery behind Barbara Morgan.

As for why A Million Little Things is only airing 17 episodes as opposed to the standard 22, this seemed to be the creative design. For some shows, it is not beneficial to run for a full 22. Sometimes, it makes greater sense to allow a story to fit into the desired box rather than being stretched out like a string of taffy.
