Criminal Minds season 13

Mrs. Carter: There’s no more mystery in regards to Spencer Reid’s new love interest on Criminal Minds season 15.

According to a new report coming in right now via TVLine, Rachel Leigh Cook is being brought in to play the character of Max. She’s described as a “quirky” and “kind-hearted” woman and will be appearing in at least two episodes of the upcoming final season of the show.

To say that Max’s inclusion makes things a little more complicated is putting things mildly, mostly because of the admission that JJ made towards Reid at the end of season 14 — that she had always loved him. Given that JJ is married to Will and the two have a family together, this makes things incredibly messy. Just because JJ admitted this does not mean that she was actually telling the truth or that she will do anything else to act on those feelings. The writers don’t seem interested in presenting either her or Reid in an unfavorable light and with that in mind, they will probably walk delicately across this story in building towards a resolution that doesn’t leave anyone looking like a jerk.

As noted in my season 15 spotlight piece on Reid earlier today, the character’s happiness is really more important than anything else — if he is able to find this within this Max character, it’s easy to imagine there could be some sort of happy ending there. That may actually make some of JJ’s feelings a little bit easier since it won’t feel as much like she is offering some false hope to someone who doesn’t have another possible love interest in his life.

Of course, all of this is something that you have to take a wait-and-see approach on. Given that Criminal Minds can certainly be a rather-demented show, there are scenarios in which it turns out that Max is actually some sort of dangerous UnSub. Could there be some sort of Cat Adams situation here? You never want to rule anything out 100% with this show, but we really don’t want to see that story repeated with another potential love interest.
