Where is Dr. Laura Bloom on New Amsterdam? Janet Montgomery’s status
Well, if you missed this past episode of the series, then you know a little bit about what’s happening with Bloom — she has been suffering from quite some time with an Adderall addiction and because of that, she is off working to get herself right. It took a lot of soul-searching, but in the end, she realized that she needed to take off in order to ensure that she could come back as a better doctor and person.
So, with this in mind, it’s fair to expect that Dr. Bloom will be MIA for a good chunk of the season moving forward — at least at the hospital. Much of that may be due to the status of actress Janet Montgomery, who is pregnant in real life. All signs point towards her spending a little bit of time away from the series, but we have every reason to believe that in due time, she is going to be coming back to the show. The story very clearly did not write her out forever, and this was just a smart way to write out the character — it makes sense for Laura Bloom, and it also makes a good bit of sense for Montgomery as a person.
Remember that New Amsterdam has already been renewed for a second season; with that in mind, it feels like more or less a sure thing that you’ll be seeing the character at that point, if not before that. There are a lot of stories for this character that can still be explored, whether it be her recovery from the addiction and then also the possible relationship with Dr. Floyd Reynolds. This was pretty prevalent at the start of the season and it’s something that we could be getting a little bit more of moving forward through the rest of the series, however that lasts.
Are we going to miss Dr. Bloom for however long the character is gone? Sure, but at the same time, there is a pretty good ensemble elsewhere. They should help to lock down the fort for however long she is gone from the overall mix. There are some good stories happening right now, with the primary one being Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) doing whatever he can to handle his treatments for cancer.
