This preview is our chance to see how Isaiah Mustafa’s character is doing … and it’s pretty clear that he’s struggling. As you can see below, Luke is having a hard time accepting that Clary is gone and is doing everything that he can to find her.

There’s one part of this that feels like he is one step away from going full Carrie from Homeland; meanwhile, there’s another part of this that is kind of sweet, even if it is obsessive. Luke treats Clary like his own daughter and is going to do everything that he can to find her. That’s why he is refusing to believe that she is gone and is desperate to find some sort of evidence that she is alive — including looking into rare forms of inter-dimensional travel.

Luke’s behavior puts Jace in the tight spot — he loves Clary, too, and he’s certainly dealing with his own grief and pain. Yet, every person handles situations like this differently and Luke’s in a position where he just needs someone to comfort him. It’s great that he wants to have hope, but he’s possibly setting himself up for a pretty epic fall here. Nine times out of ten, someone in Clary’s position isn’t actually still out there. He’s just lucky in this sense that Clary is still somewhere out there, but as you’re going to see pretty early on, she is not exactly the same person she once was. She will have gone through quite a bit since we last saw her and throughout the midseason premiere, we may get at least a small sense of that. The drama is going to be on another level, as will the performance of Katherine McNamara.

Speaking of performances, how great is Mustafa in this scene? This is one of the most vulnerable scenes we’ve ever seen from him as an actor, as his character is clearly desperate to just find something to cling to, even if he doesn’t actually know if there is anything there.
