The Newsroom season 4 revival not happening, claims Aaron Sorkin
Let’s be honest: If The Newsroom was currently on the air, we have a feeling that it’d be so much more popular than it was through its three seasons on the air. This was a moderate hit for HBO, and it touched on serious issues related to the news media. We know that there were some critiques at times that it was a little too wholesome and at times hopeful in its approach, but some of its optimism amidst the darkness could be appreciated now. Even if it was a tad pedantic, we appreciate that in an era where the vast majority of characters swim in a sea of negativity.
Alas, just because a show should be on the air now doesn’t mean that it will. Speaking in a new interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, here is some of what show creator Aaron Sorkin had to say on the subject:
“I wish the show was on the air now … I would love to be writing it now. But there are other things coming up [in my work now]. I have no plans to return to anything I’ve done.”
This comment is probably a blow to some of the people out there who wanted to see Sorkin bring back The West Wing, or even create a sequel-of-sorts to The Social Network — given all of the headlines surrounding Facebook as of late, there’s certainly room for something like that. Sorkin worked on a version of To Kill a Mockingbird over on Broadway, one that brought him back into the same orbit as Will McAvoy himself in Jeff Daniels.
As much as we would like a new version of The Newsroom in 2019, we also do appreciate some of Sorkin’s candor on this particular subject. It’s a reminder that sometimes, we don’t need a revival of every single show under the sun. Sometimes, you just have to leave shows where they are and move on to some other stuff. We do think that this is a trend that is going to actually continue moving forward — while we know that rebooting/reviving old properties was hot for a while, we haven’t heard of as many pilots that are in this vein just yet. There may still be some, but we think that bringing old shows back is going to eventually reach a natural endpoint. It often does, like many other trends that exist out there.
One other thing that we should note — wouldn’t it be great to get a revival of Sports Night? If there is an underrated Sorkin show that deserves another shot, that’s it.
