Because this is such a new competition, there is a little bit of uncertainty that comes along with that. We don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with this part of the competition, including how certain things are going to be structured or how the battles are going to work. It does appear, based on the promo below, that you will see contestants paired off against each other and only one of the two will advance — it’s similar to The Voice, at least in that way. We’re just surprised that it’s called the Battle Rounds given that this is the same exact name it has on that show. (Then again, both of these shows are from executive producer Mark Burnett.)

You can get a sense in the promo as to who is going to be facing off against who — Dimash Kudaibergen, for example, is going to be squaring off against Sister Christina. Meanwhile, Drew Barrymore is going to have a significant blast from the past when pianist Lydian plays the iconic theme song from E.T., otherwise known as the movie that started everything for her at an extremely young age.

It’s remarkable in some ways that we are moving already through to this next phase of the competition and that we’ve already met all of the auditioning contestants, but there is one thing that comes out of this that we consider to be rather great — we are actually going to have a chance to get to know everyone. Sometimes, talent shows do suffer from giving us too many people and we can’t keep track of everyone. Hopefully, we’ve got enough time left this season so that all of them stand out in one way or another.

If we were to label some favorites following the first round, we do think that the Kukkiwon team from the premiere was exceptional. Meanwhile, Dimash has to be up there given the quality of his voice and everything that he can do. Meanwhile, Dundu Giants of Light could be an interesting darkhorse given that they do something that is completely and utterly unique from what you’re going to see from virtually anyone else on the show.
