If you’ve been following along, you’re likely more than aware at the moment that The Orville is a mysterious show. The producers and Fox have a tendency to not give too much away in terms of the story in advance, largely because there’s no reason for them to do so. This is a series that succeeds largely on the strength of surprise, great science fiction, and the relationships between characters.
Thursday night’s new episode kicks off what seems to be a two-part storyline entitled “Identity,” and Fox is at least giving you a small sense via the promo below as to what’s coming up. You’re going to see the Orville and the crew venture into a mysterious place, one that the crew has really no knowledge of at all. This is a part of the joy that comes with watching a space show — exploration! It ‘s a chance to test the imagination of the writers and really experience some of the ideas that are in their mind. This episode will bring you some of that via whatever this civilization is … and whatever adverse effects they bring.
In the promo, you do see the ship being scanned apparently prior to arrival, and on the other side of that, you also hear them call up an emergency. While we’ve seen some of the various crew members on the show in some sort of danger before, we’re not sure that it has happened in any way quite like this. We’re excited to see what’s causing this, but also if there are any long-lasting ramifications of this mission on the entire crew. This could prove itself to be the biggest storyline we’ve seen to date this season … but it’s also okay if it isn’t when the dust settles. A part of the beauty of this show is that it’s okay to see stories exist as just one-and-done plots. They are all movies and windows into a psychology of given characters. It’s allowing exploration to be more than just traveling from one planet to the next.
This is the customary part of the article in which we remind you to check out The Orville live. After all, there is no guarantee of another season beyond this one and we want to see the series stick around for as long as we possibly can. Even with a reported tax credit for a potential third season, there is no guarantee it will stick around.
