Can you believe that Outlander season 5 filming is right around the corner? Before too long, you are going to get a chance to see Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, and the rest of the cast hard at work in Scotland. This show requires a ton of focus, long hours, and at times difficult conditions. There are night shoots, midges, remote locations, and all sorts of other important stuff involved.

Give that production is so challenging, that’s why we were so surprised earlier this week to learn about Outlander Untold. What is this? You can read more here, but basically, they are a extra scenes filmed during production specifically for the Blu-Ray. It’s an ambitious idea, and one that is certainly smart in that it gives fans more of an incentive to go out and purchase the collection. It’s also basically an opportunity for viewers to be able to see footage and scenes that they would not have an opportunity to otherwise. These aren’t deleted scenes; they were never intended to be in the episode, and are viewed as something extra and something special.
Now, the question remains whether or not this is going to be a one-time thing. Our feeling is that these are something that Sony would like to do in the future, especially since there are a) so many scenes from the books to replicate and b) opportunities to maybe explore little odds and ends that don’t make it into the show otherwise. Take, for example, how Rollo and Ian first came together — actually getting to see that scene instead of just hearing about it.
Of course, these scenes aren’t necessarily, and the top priority should be on just delivering the best show possible. Yet, if there is a little bit of time and a small production unit available, we wouldn’t be opposed to there being even more untold scenes than the four that are in the season 4 collection. Think of a bonus scene for every episode for diehard fans — one of the struggles that Outlander has is that it has so many great characters that occasionally, you don’t always get all of the backstory and time with them you want. Something like Untold is a chance to correct that and offer up more of a reminder that this is a living world full of great characters and immersive characters.
Even though we haven’t seen the extra season 4 scenes yet, we still hope that this is a tradition that the series sticks with for some time.
