The Umbrella Academy season 2 renewal: Will it happen at Netflix?

Umbrella Academy

Following today’s big premiere, what are the chances of an Umbrella Academy season 2 renewal at Netflix? Within this piece, we want to outline some of the odds!

Before we say too much else, we should go ahead and make it clear the streaming service hasn’t technically made a move one way or another on the return of the series … but we do remain fairly optimistic. While Netflix has become more liberal when it comes to its cancellations as of late, they do have a tendency to give most of their shows a chance to have at least two seasons. We just have to wait and see if that is a tradition that lasts for a little while longer.

Also, we know for sure that there is more than enough source material out there to make another batch of episodes. The first season doesn’t cover all of it, and we’ve got a feeling that there was a plan here from the start for us to get a little bit more of the series.

Then, there’s also another interesting thing to consider at this very moment: Netflix doesn’t exactly have anywhere near as many comic-book adaptations on tap as they did at this point a couple of years ago! We don’t know how much this sort of thing really matters to them in terms of their genre coverage, but we know that they’re losing a ton of Marvel properties due to their own decisions. To date, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist have all already been canceled, and there are certainly some less-than-favorable rumors out there regarding the end of The Punisher. If they do end this show, then they’re going to be left in a situation where their only Marvel series is Jessica Jones.

What is Netflix’s renewal timeline?

Think of things this way — the streaming service tends to confirm their renewals, one way or another, within a couple of months after the season premieres. They measure the success of their shows by the number of people who watch a season straight through more so than they do the number of people who watch the first episode. Getting people in the door is nice, but they want to know that there are a ton of viewers who will still be watching and tweeting about the show after the fact. They need to have shows that will create some genuine buzz; that’s the best way to ensure that there’s going to be success for a season 2 down the line.
