This Is Us season 3 won’t have Miguel-centric episode

Where was the big Miguel episode for This Is Us season 3? That is, admittedly, a question we’ve been wondering. This was something that was hyped up a little bit before the season even started and with that, it’s something that we’ve been expecting.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Jon Huertas is going to get the big spotlight episode, after all — at least for the time being. Instead, the plan here seems to be to give Miguel bits and pieces of important stories throughout the run of the series. Specifically, here is what show executive producer Isaac Aptaker had to say on this subject in a new interview with TVLine:

“His [story] is one that we’re going to spread [out]. It’s not going to be all condensed into one episode.”

There is one example of a personal storyline featuring Miguel from earlier this season, where his kids have a very uncomfortable meal with him and Rebecca. He’s accused of being a poor father when really his decisions when it comes to working and the aftermath of his previous split left him in a position to be easily vilified. While he’s not a perfect person, he is certainly trying his best.

We’ve felt a lot for Miguel over the years, mostly because it’s long felt as though the character is in an almost impossible spot. Think of things this way — he’s filling an emotional void left by Jack Pearson, a man thought of by many as this idealistic father. We’ve since seen some of his flaws, but that doesn’t take away from how much he cared about Rebecca or his kids. Miguel doesn’t have that many opportunities to come into his own — his appearances on the show are even sporadic. Even on this past episode, for example, Miguel wasn’t around for Rebecca meeting Nicky for the first time. He could’ve been a good support system there for her, given that he and Jack did have a close friendship for many years. He did at least know a version of adult Jack more than many other characters, and we do wonder just how deep Jack ever got with him when it came to certain aspects of his past.
