Outlander season 5: EP suggests possibility of more love scenes

Outlander

When it comes to a show like Outlanderwe understands that there is always a debate for what viewers want. An epic love story is first and foremost with this show, and sometimes, that manifests itself in different ways. There are some who love the small gestures and moments, there are others who love the full-on love scenes, and there are others who like a little bit of both.

We do know that for some, there was a feeling that season 4 was lacking in the love-scene department; based on a social-media Q&A following the finale, we know that one scene in particular was left on the cutting room floor. It may just not have worked within the context of the story.

While there are no guarantees, it seem like season 5 is going to be moving back in that direction. Speaking via Glamour while at the TCA Winter Press Tour, executive producer Maril Davis had the following to say:

“I think every season is different … This season we were introducing more characters, and there was a lot of story to get in. We’ve always talked about the sex scenes—we love them too—but they have to be organic to the story … I do anticipate a return, hopefully, to that next season a little more. Every season has its different storylines and where we’re going. It can’t always re-create the first season, which was very special, but it just has to be within the story and feel like it’s organic. That’s something we work on, and the actors work on. It’s a collaboration.”

We think that Davis says it best — the scenes can’t just be there for the sake of them being there. They need to be present on the show to signify something important, beyond at times just the connection between some of the characters. They can follow big moments, reunions, or victories that transpire. With season 5 being at least slightly more stable (Fraser’s Ridge is a little more solidified — even if there could be chaos there due to Tryon), there could be more time to work on relationships.

No matter what happens, we’re going to be waiting a while in order to see it — Outlander season 5 is going to be filming in Scotland very soon, and more than likely, it’s going to be 2020 before it premieres. Maybe it’s possible in theory that this comes about sooner, but we don’t want to hold our breath.
