What’s worth knowing about The Orville season 2 episode 8? Well, for better or for worse, Fox is continuing to keep the cards close.
We’ve written about this to a certain extent already — it’s an interesting line that Fox is walking with this show. It’s understandable that they want to keep the stories of this show a secret, but at the same time, we do think that there is a little bit of value in having something out there to promote the show. We want to see the series renewed, and while the series does have a diehard following, it needs to be able to recruit some new viewers at the same time.
For now, what we know is this: The next new episode of the series carries with it the title of “Identity, Pt. 1,” which is a pretty clear indication (unless Seth MacFarlane is being exceptionally cruel) that we’re getting sort of significant arc … whether it be in two parts or something otherwise. This is something that The Orville does not do with regularity, so you have to assume that it is something special, something significant, and hopefully something that is very much worth your time.
Tonally, we don’t think that the series really needs to do all that much to turn the tide — after all, what they’re doing at the moment is pretty darn special. They’re finding a way to tell some great stories that each speak to some sort of larger message — whether it be inclusion, understanding oneself, or battling ignorance. This is a space story with some old-school lessons at the center of it, and it’s a shame that the critical community does not really understand some of its overall greatness. We think that it brings so much to the table, and we still hope that there are more people who discover it.
If you think we sound anxious about the show’s season 3 future in this piece, it’s because we are. That anxiety is probably going to spike more and more as the show goes on, at least however long Fox takes to decide on the future of the series one way or another.
