American Idol season 17: Katy Perry, judges head to Idaho in new promo

American Idol season 17 is set to premiere on ABC come Sunday, March 3, and the new promo is heading to uncharted waters — to be specific, Idaho. We’re seeing the show venture off into a new place to celebrate the show as we prepare for what could be a fun season — it’s one that actually feels somewhat-under the radar at the moment. Who would’ve ever thought that we would be there with this particular show?

Last year, the landmark singing competition returned following a short hiatus with a new batch of episodes on ABC after years over on Fox, and we think that the results were at least moderately pleasing. While there is no global superstar from the show, there were at least some decent ratings. Our issue still remains the fact that there are two singing shows on at roughly the same time in this and The Voice and, to go along with that, also this year America’s Got Talent: The Champions and The World’s Best, which also feature vocalists.

Ultimately, we’ve got a feeling that this is going to be one of the most saturated markets for singing shows that we’ve ever seen, and it’s not like any of them are delivering the mammoth ratings we were seeing for this genre a decade ago in the first place.

This new American Idol season 17 promo is really not so much about introducing us to some new contestants — instead, it’s throwing some of the judges front and center. We do wonder about that when viewers already know Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry on the show, but at the same time, there’s still no denying that Perry is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet and, to go along with that, Ritchie is a music icon and Bryan has a big country following. Unless you are a thousand percent sure that you’ve got a global superstar among your first crop of contestants, it makes sense to lead with what you know rather than just promoting with some unknown singers.

We’re excited still to dive into the new season, mostly because there’s nothing quite like that first audition that manages to completely blow you away. We just how that there are some more opportunities in order to see unique talent. We don’t want to just see singers who, one way or another, we’ve had an opportunity to see in the past. That’s just not anywhere as interesting.
