Outlander season 5 starts filming next week, per Caitriona Balfe

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour today for Starz’s “Fiercely Female” panel, Caitriona Balfe (see the tweet below) confirmed that the show is going to be filming in Glasgow starting next week! This goes along with the filming timeline that Cesar Domboy first suggested last year. February was the date that we were banking on for a while with season 5 production, but a list of recent traineeships suggested that the show could be starting a little bit later. (Some cast and crew members may be starting work later than others.)
Upon reflection, though, our feeling is that many of those traineeships are for the show’s filming base around Cumbernauld, while it seems as though Outlander is starting out with some more on-location work. This is not the first time in which the series has filmed in Glasgow, and we understand why they would want to. With its older architecture, they can use the city as a double for some of the more populated sequences on the show. We certainly had no problem imagining that the story was set in North Carolina in season 4, even if it was filmed on the other side of the ocean.
Of course, odds are that we are going to continue to see Outlander in production through most of the winter, summer, and potentially the fall. There is going to be a long time to discuss various locations and some of the work that you’re going to see for the entire cast. Based on the aforementioned traineeships, work for many crew members could last until at least November. We’ll follow things forward with a fairly-loose timeline in mind, knowing that things can change.
The most important thing, at least at the moment, is remembering that season 5 is probably not going to premiere until really late this year or, more than likely, in 2020. Typically, Starz does a good job of keeping many of us engaged during production, so we have a feeling they will do the same thing here. We don’t expect major teases for a while, but even a photo or two would be nice.
