NCIS season 16 episode 13 expectations: Will there be a ratings bump?

NCIS

Tonight, NCIS may be delivering its biggest episode of season 16; if nothing else, it’s being promoted as such which  does make some sense since this episode was created for sweeps!

This upcoming episode, entitled “She,” is going to be bringing something that CBS crime procedural has not had for the better part of the past few seasons — intrigue surrounding Ziva. The last time we really had that was near the end of season 13, where Michael Weatherly departed the show and where the character supposedly “died.”

Well, the thing is that we never saw a dead body and within the world of TV, that typically means that there is something more afoot. That is one of the reasons why, entering tonight’s episode, there is a lot of discussion surrounding whether or not Cote de Pablo’s character could still be out there. The promos have served as a way to further wonder that, as Ziva is apparently connected in some way to the mystery at the heart of the story.

The commercial success of “She” still remains in many ways to be determined, but obviously, the network wants some big things for it. For starters, it was promoted during the Super Bowl, and not every other show on CBS was. To date, the highest-rated episode of season 16 was the premiere in September — that episode generated a 1.4 rating in the demo and, to go along with that, over 12.5 million live viewers. We think that CBS is looking for something more out of tonight (it is sweeps after all and that’s the purpose of sweeps to generate big ratings) — whether or not they get it remains to be seen, but this has the potential to be the highest-rated episode this season.

Is it fair to speculate as to whether or not the Ziva mystery is being used as just a way to get people watching — if this is some sort of stunt for ratings with little actual substance, there could be ratings ramifications for that down the road. That’s why it was risky for the NCIS producers and CBS to go down this road, and you have to hope that they are bringing something substantial to the table story-wise that makes this worth it for everyone. We know that NCIS didn’t actually need to do this — it’s pretty much been a lock for some time that we are going to get a season 17. Even if it’s not as popular as it once was, it’s still CBS’ number one show and it’s still bringing in cash.

Our approach to tonight

We will be posting a full review of what transpires in “She” shortly after the episode wraps on the East Coast — be sure to check back for that! Also, we will have a new video to go along with it on the YouTube Channel so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out. We know what the hype is for this episode, and we want to do our best to make sure there are plenty of outlets for discussion!
