Scream Queens season 3 not happening at Fox … for now
Speaking (via Deadline) while at the TCA Winter Press Tour this past week, network programming head Charlie Collier made it very clear that “there are no plans right now on Scream Queens … [With that said], we take Ryan Murphy seriously when he wants to build something.” Collier’s comment is in response to the show executive producer himself stating that he has talked with some of the show’s cast about potentially bringing it back at some point down the road.
Do we think that a new version of Scream Queens could work? Absolutely, but it’s not something that the broadcast network feels all that much pressure to deliver at this particular moment in time. Think about things in this way — the second season was only generating a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic near the end of its run, which is not the sort of number that is going to get the show renewed. The only network that this would be a tolerable live rating for is The CW. Scream Queens on paper looked like it would be a much bigger hit than it was, given its cast full of big names (think Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, Emma Roberts, Taylor Lautner, and John Stamos for season 2) and also the prestige of Ryan as a showrunner.
We’ve always thought that if there was one thing holding it back more than anything, it was the network itself. This was a show destined to be weird, inappropriate, and edgy, and there was only so far it could go on a broadcast network catering more towards families. It actually feels as though it would be perfect on a streaming provider like Netflix — which, for the record, Murphy is working with closely at this point under his new overall dead. If he was able to bring Scream Queens to this service with darker subject matter but still plenty of humor, we’ve got a chance that it could be a big hit there. Given its super-serialized nature, it’s hard to envision a scenario where it would not find some sort of audience.
Of course, if we ever do hear something more when it comes to a new version of Scream Queens, we’ll have that for you soon enough.
