True Detective season 3 episode 7 preview: ‘The Final Country’

As we approach True Detective season 3 episode 7 airing on HBO next week, the first shocking thing to point out is simply this: We are almost to the end of the season. There is only one episode left on the other side of next week’s! It’s shocking how fast this season has gone, but of course, this is what happens when you do only eight episodes and you air the first two over the course of a single night.

At least one thing that we can say that we haven’t always been able to is that the series is moving forward with some semblance of momentum — it’s the sort of thing that it didn’t have all that much of last season. It’s the warm audience reception and also the strong ratings (more than eight million viewers weekly are watching season 3 across all platforms) that are leading to HBO already starting to think about what’s next. With that being said, we don’t anticipate there being a season 4 renewal anytime soon — this show needs to be an event that only happens, at most, every couple of years. There’s no real need to rush it along too much beyond that. Given Nic Pizzolatto time to create something great — that’s what benefited this season.

Next week, True Detective season 3 episode 7 is bringing you “The Final Country,” a story that will be about Wayne and Roland working to piece together the past courtesy of a man who departed the police long ago. Why did that happen? There could be some valuable intel here, while at the same time the one-eyed man mystery will escalate further elsewhere. We don’t expect too many answers here (some of that could be saved for the finale), but we do want to see the show continue to build in a solid direction.

Below, CarterMatt has the official True Detective season 3 episode 7 synopsis with some more insight all about what is going to be coming up:

Following up on new leads, Wayne (Mahershala Ali) and Roland (Stephen Dorff) track down a man who left the police force in the midst of the Purcell investigation. Meanwhile, Amelia (Carmen Ejogo) visits Lucy Purcell’s best friend in hopes of gaining insights into the whereabouts of the mysterious one-eyed man.

We are always nervous about the end of a show like this, mostly because it can be so very difficult for so many loose ends to be tied up in a satisfying way. That’s why the journey has to factor into the journey as much as the conclusion — that way, it’s a little harder to leave disappointed.
