Shameless season 9 episode 10 review: Was Fiona arrested?

At the end of tonight’s episode, Fiona found herself in a position where she was in handcuffs, largely because she took her protest of her new neighbor too far. One of the things that we’ve long praised this show for was its ability to be able to combine pop-culture headlines with its own signature style, and we certainly saw that with the lemonade-stand story here. Liam had set up shop in front of this neighbor’s house, and really wasn’t doing much other than trying to make enough money to satisfy Debbie. Yet, this woman called the cops on him and his friends, an action seemingly inspired by real-life headlines about people calling the cops on black kids.
Fiona wanted revenge on said neighbor, which is why at the end of the episode we ended up seeing her punching said woman in the face at an impromptu block party thrown outside of her house to teach her a lesson. Fiona took her revenge too far, and now it seems like she’s in even more disarray than ever.
To think, earlier on in the episode it was almost as though she had gotten her life back on track — after a scary incident at the restaurant she decided to sober up and try to resume more of a normal life. Unfortunately, her getting fired (her past catching up with her) basically ensured that this turnaround was a brief one. Now, she has no job and no real hope at a future.
Other odds and ends
For starters, Lip’s relationship with Tami is starting to get a little bit more serious, as he saw a side of her this week that suggested that the two could have a happy future. Maybe this inspires him to be better?
Carl, meanwhile, found himself another new gig being a sign-spinner dressed, more or less, as Captain Jack Sparrow — he’s also in a super-strange spot in his relationship with Kelly, given that she had an interesting moment with Debbie at the end of the episode after she rescued her from underneath the house. This is something everyone else was incapable of doing — including Ingrid, who was having a meltdown inside the house and is refusing to give up on her idea of carrying six babies to term.
CarterMatt Verdict
Shameless season 9 episode 10 offered us a chance to see something that was both weird and wonderful, something that was decorated with funny moments and then serious ones. There was also the bittersweet departure of Santiago, as he and his sister are heading back to Guatemala in order to be with their family. They realized that America was not what they thought it was — Kevin and V tried to be the best foster parents they could for him, and sometimes, things are just bigger than what the two of them can offer.
