As we get into this episode, death is something that has to be on the minds of many of its characters — and for good reason, when you think about the way that the midseason finale ended. Some of these characters are reeling from what transpired with Jesus’ death, and to go along with that, they’ve also gotta contend with the arrival of the Whisperers. This is not going to be a particularly easy group of people for them to deal with, largely due to the fact that they are so dangerous and different from any other foe that we’ve seen over the years. These are people who put on the skin of walkers and then work to achieve more or less whatever they want.
The sneak peek below from Sunday’s episode poses a very key question: What can our heroes do to really stop a group of people like this? It’s a real struggle, mostly given the fact that they don’t know the difference between Whisperer and walker. Maybe it will become a little bit easier to decipher over time, but at the start of this episode, it’s not going to be something that anyone figures out all that easily. This is certainly different from what we’ve seen before.

Hopefully, this midseason premiere does give us a good opportunity to specifically know some of the major players at the heart of the Whisperer movement — we’re speaking here, of course, about Samantha Morton’s Alpha more so than anyone. She is influential, mysterious, and really the Big Bad at the heart of the story at the moment. We just hope that there are some surprises along the way.
