We knew that Halsey was a good performer going into this particular number, but this is what cemented it more than anything. There was so much good stuff to like here from start to finish — a lot of power, some great vocals, and emotional lyrics. This wasn’t a song that we were altogether familiar with going into the performance, but it’s worthy of another listen or two. The goal you should have going into just about every single SNL performance is that you get some new fans, and we certainly think that Halsey achieved that. While this was a ballad, at the same time she did also bring a little bit of sass and her signature style to it — this wasn’t just your prototypical pop ballad that you’ve had a chance to hear on the show in the past — or from other pop stars in general.
As for Halsey’s second song, a little bit later in the show she came out with a performance of “Eastside” that had a significant challenge to it. She had too figure out a way to both paint and sing at the first time, which we have a feeling is a whole lot harder than it seems to be on the surface. We could argue that it was a little bit harder to get into this performance because we were so focused on the painting, but there was something so fascinating about it — this was about getting a chance to see the performance, but beyond that trying to make a statement of her own. This was not your typical SNL performance, but it was enjoyable in his simplicity.
