Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5 video: Trixie, Dr. Turner talk new test
In the sneak peek below, you can see the latest efforts of one Trixie Franklin alongside Dr. Turner in an effort to help Mrs. Porter with a cervical smear test, one that will prove to be very useful to help both herself and also some future generations of women. It’s hardly the most comfortable test in the world but it’s something that Trixie and Dr. Turner know is important — they’re able to also convince Mrs. Porter of the same.
While there are a number of reasons to appreciate Call the Midwife as a series, one of the things that we feel they do perhaps the greatest job at is really showing medical advancements and also a willingness by the main characters to accept change. It’s an interesting dichotomy — Nonnatus House is extremely important to this show, and in a lot of ways the characters there are fairly traditional and conservative in their approaches to a new society. Yet, at the same time you have people like Dr. Turner and Trixie, who are fine to embrace new concepts and ideas. The thing that they care about more than anything else is that there are advancements for women and that their health is put constantly at the center — they don’t want to settle with just things as they are. Instead, they want to focus more on what could be down the line.
This episode of Call the Midwife, rest assured, will have so much more than you see here — you actually are going to have a chance to see one of the most-romantic story arcs of the season courtesy of Lucille, who ends up bonding with a man that she meets while on the job. Because of that, though, things become somewhat difficult when she hesitates to embrace the idea of getting close to someone who could interfere, even unintentionally, with some of her duties. It’s really the Call the Midwife version of a classic moral conflict — is it wrong to pursue happiness for yourself, especially in an environment where you are meant to pursue the happiness and health of others? To us, it is mostly about compartmentalizing — Lucille can in theory have it all, but it’s all about knowing what to say and also figuring out the right timing in which to do so that doesn’t interfere with the task at hand.
