According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gurira’s arc on the upcoming season will bear some similarity to what we saw to Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln, mostly in that she is appearing in a handful of upcoming episodes. Yet, at the same time, these will be interspersed more through the season, as opposed to them necessarily just put together at the start of the arc. That’s a little bit different than what we saw for the Maggie or Rick characters.

Following her exit, signs suggest that Gurira may eventually head in the direction of the Walking Dead movies that are being planned with Andrew Lincoln as the lead.

This exit has been thought of by many as more or less a foregone conclusion. There has been a lot of talk surrounding a potential exit for Gurira from The Walking Dead for quite some time now, with rumors suggesting that she could depart to have more time to work in the theater or in feature films. She did achieve a lot of success as a part of Black Panther and her career seems to be at its creative zenith at the moment. It makes sense to strike while the iron is hot.

Of course, losing Gurira from The Walking Dead is going to be an enormous blow to the franchise at large, given that we are talking about one of the biggest names that the series has and a person who is a major presence in the comics. Yet, this is the primary difference in source material here. It’s a little bit easier for characters to have a long life in the comic-book source material when there is not an actor playing them in real life. It’s a little bit of a different story when you are talking about the show, mostly due to the fact that actors want to eventually go off and do some other things. Gurira’s casting was first announced at the end of season 2 and she went on to be a major part of every season since. She’s a role that can not easily be replaced, especially when you think a little bit about the relationships she has with some other characters.
