There’s a chance at this point you’ve heard the doubly-good news — not only is Shameless coming back for season 10 but so is Cameron Monaghan! After leaving this season as Ian went to prison, the actor is going to be back in some capacity for the next batch of episodes.

So how is this coming about now? The first thing to note here, via TVLine, is that Monaghan is going to be back as a series regular. This isn’t just a one or two-episode gig. He also makes it clear that he was at a point in season 9 where he just wanted to step away, but he is now at a point where he’s interested in coming back and having things work for him. Take a look at what he had to say:
“I talked to [showrunner] John Wells about possible things we could do with the character in the future … We got to a place, both creatively and financially, where I felt comfortable coming back. Much of that had to do with what we were going to do with the story. So I’m really excited to be able to go back and do that.”
Monaghan was coy about the potential future of Noel Fisher’s character of Mickey, who is not currently part of a season 10 cast. At the end of his season 9 arc, Ian reunited with his former love behind bars and they seemed to reboot their relationship almost immediately. There are a lot of things to wonder now, including whether or not Mickey is going to be getting out anytime soon and beyond that, even if the two will still be together. We know that there’s a huge fanbase for these characters out there and understandably so, and there could be a future for the two of them. With that said, our estimation is that the writers are going to take a look at a number of different storylines for Ian. Our hope is that he can just find a little bit of stability for himself that allows him to feel a little bit healthier. We know that this is something that he has struggled with here and there over the years.
The new season of Shameless with Monaghan will be premiering this fall; meanwhile, there are still multiple episodes to air still in season 9, including one that is coming on Sunday night. If you do want to preview that one, all you have to do is head over to the link here.
