American Horror Story season 9: Gus Kenworthy, Emmy Roberts join

American Horror Story season 8

We know that Ryan Murphy can sometimes surprise with his American Horror Story casting news, but even for him, this following bit of news raises some eyebrows.

In a new post today via Instagram, the prolific showrunner confirmed for the first time that Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy is going to be appearing in a major role as the boyfriend of Emma Roberts’ mysterious character on the show. Kenworthy has done a little bit of acting beyond his acting career, but some of it has been as himself; this is a different sort of challenge, but we have a feeling that Murphy would not have signed him on board unless he was confident that Gus could kill this role. He has a good habit of bringing us surprising castings — hence bringing Lady Gaga on board the franchise for Hotel and also managing to balance out what are at times some really large casts.

If there’s one thing that we would say about season 9 at present, it’s that we hope it goes back to basics a little bit. In a lot of ways, American Horror Story: Apocalypse could have worked as a final season given how it managed to bridge together a couple of past seasons and really culminate a lot of the show’s story. We don’t think you can plan to go bigger with this story than the potential end of the world, so we’d focus on something smaller and a little bit more character-driven instead. We’d look more towards American Horror Story: Roanoke as an inspiration — personally, we still feel like that season is the most underrated of the franchise. While it did get a little bit over-the-top near the end (to be fair most of his seasons of this show end up that way), it did still feel fairly personal and small compared to some of the others.

Alas, there is still no word on the particular theme at the heart of season 9 — clearly, that’s something that you’re going to have to wait on for a little while longer. The new season most likely will not premiere until the fall, which is the typical timeline for the series. Nobody at FX wants to shift the franchise too much from airing around Halloween, where it can draw the biggest numbers.
