The Conners season 2 renewal still likely, despite no clear deal

Speaking (via Deadline) while at the TCA Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, network programming head Karey Burke confirmed that parties are “close” to getting a deal done. Much of the wait here has to do with locking in the show’s cast who ahave all expressed how much they’ve enjoyed working on the show.
As we’ve noted in the past, the renewal situation for The Conners is vastly different to a number of other series out there, mostly in that The Conners does not have its cast on six or seven-year deals in the same way that many other new shows do. Much of that has to do with it being a legacy show that came on board following the exit of Roseanne Barr. We know that some of these actors are busy and working on other things — John Goodman is a part of Danny McBride’s new HBO show, Sara Gilbert is on The Talk, and Emma Kenney is a part of Shameless … and that’s not even mentioning Laurie Metcalf’s incredible film career.
This is a show that will likely continue for however long some of the key players want it to, and because of that, we’re fairly confident that it’s going to have a little bit more life left in it even beyond a second season. ABC is keeping the episode count fairly low (the plan is for season 2 to run for about 13 episodes), which is going to give most of the cast the opportunity to do some other things while still having them back for The Conners as well.
As of right now, our feeling is that the renewal will be official by the time we get around to the spring. Technically, ABC has until May in order to figure things out, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will wait until then. The sooner that they can figure out some of their schedules for the future, the better off that they will be. Nobody likes there to be some sort of crazy scrum in May sweeps where it’s hard to keep track of all of the news … but that is almost certain to happen anyway.
