Speaking to reporters today at the TCA Winter Press Tour, new ABC boss Karey Burke confirmed that the series will return this fall. She also added that the decision to hold the show back this spring was made prior to her arriving in her position. (Channing Dungey departed her post as programming head last year.)
While the ratings for Dancing with the Stars are not what they once were at ABC, the show remains viable for the network and it helps them keeps some live programming on the air. It has a loyal audience and at this point, some of the pro dancers are just as well-known as the Stars who appear.
Our hope when the show does return though, is that ABC doesn’t get too aggressive on some course-correction following the controversial victory of Bobby Bones on this past season. While you can easily make the case that Bones’ shouldn’t have won (he wasn’t exactly a great dancer), the audience voting is a key element of what makes this show great. If you want to see a better dancer win, the way to resolve it is simply make sure you vote and get others to do the same. We see Bones’ victory as an outlier more than the norm and taking away what makes this show so interactive for the fans would ruin some of the fun. We like watching and not knowing what’s going to happen on any given episode.
Odds are, we’ll start to hear more in the way of casting rumors this summer — we don’t expect any sort of major change. We’re probably going to get, by and large, the same combination of actors, reality stars, athletes, and notable figures that we’ve had in the past. We also don’t think that the break is going to make it so that there are suddenly more famous people taking part. We think if the ratings are solid for the series this fall, the show’s return in the spring is very much possible. We don’t think that there’s a real motive for ABC to just not do it anymore.
