Is Ashleigh Murray leaving Riverdale for Katy Keene spin-off show?

Riverdale season 3 episode 2

If Riverdale’s upcoming spin-off Katy Keene ends up being ordered to series at The CW, it looks as though it’s going to be taking one of its more notable characters with it. Based on a new logline uncovered via TVLine, it looks as though if this show is picked up, Ashleigh Murray will be departing Riverdale as Josie McCoy.

So why is that happening? More so than anything, it feels as though this is a way to support the spin-off from the get-go and make sure that has attention on it. It could also give Murray a little bit more screen-time — this is a show with a slightly smaller cast from the get-go and Riverdale does have to cater to so many different people at one time. This season in particular we haven’t had nearly enough of a Josie storyline and her character is getting lost in the shuffle – which truly sucks because Josie is such a great character and Murray plays her beautifully!

Anyhow, take a look at the new show’s logline in full below:

“Katy Keene follows the lives and loves of four iconic Archie Comics characters — including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene and singer/songwriter Josie McCoy — as they chase their twenty-something dreams in New York City. This musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway, and in the recording studio.”

Basically, this series seems to be focusing the majority of its attention on trying to make people’s hopes and dreams a reality. It’s going to be about watching people find some success in the big city and there could be an aspirational quality to it that feels really exciting. Just as long as this doesn’t turn into Sex and the City vibe we will be happy.

As for whether or not we could lose Josie permanently from Riverdale, there’s always going to be room for more appearances down the line. If this new show doesn’t end up getting picked up, after all, there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll see her back on the main show again.

Unfortunately, we’re going to be stuck waiting for a little while in order to figure out whether or not this spin-off is going to become a reality. Think in terms of the May upfronts. This would in some ways be the third show in the Riverdale extended universe, as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is technically already there. However, it’s not really intent on delivering a lot of straightforward crossovers, which makes sense given that it airs globally on Netflix; meanwhile, Riverdale is, of course, a CW show in the United States.
