New Amsterdam season 2 renewal official at NBC after strong ratings

After so many renewals were confirmed at CBS last month, NBC is now getting into the renewal game. Today, the network confirmed that New Amsterdam is coming back for a second season!

From the start, it was clear that the Ryan Eggold-led medical drama was on the road to a bright future at the network. It premiered to fantastic numbers earlier this fall and over the course of season 1, it averaged a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s easily good enough to bring the show back for another season, especially since it has charted up a number of timeslot wins from NBC ever since its premiere in the fall.

In a statement, NBC Entertainment co-presidents of scripted programming Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta had the following to say:

“We’ve been so excited to see how much audiences have embraced Dr. Max Goodwin and all the characters that make New Amsterdam such an incredibly compelling medical series … Congratulations to [executive producers] David Schulner, Peter Horton, our writers and an amazing cast and crew who have brought these stories to life.”

So what could be coming up for New Amsterdam next season? We don’t expect a particularly huge format twist or anything that dramatically changes the show — this is a hospital drama at its core and it will almost certainly stay that way. Yet, our hope is that by the end of the season we start to see Eggold’s character of Max on the upswing and preparing for what could be a better, brighter future for himself. He’s someone who certainly deserves happiness and success.

The biggest question to wonder is whether or not NBC will continue to schedule New Amsterdam on Tuesday nights in the fall following This Is Us, or if they are going to find a new home for it elsewhere. The tricky thing for the network at the moment is that they don’t really have a whole lot of room for shows on its schedule, since other than maybe on Friday night, most scripted properties are likely to come back. If New Amsterdam were to move timeslots then, they would have to find a way to dramatically change up another lineup to make it happen. Wednesday is solid with One Chicago, and we’re assuming that the network would like to at least keep some comedies on the air on Thursdays.

They’ll have plenty of time to sort things out in terms of the future of New Amsterdam — for now, let’s just send out our thanks to the cast and crew and to NBC for bringing this show back for another go around.
