Let’s kick things off here with the oh-so-sad reminder that there is no new episode airing on ABC next week, You’re getting a brief break from the Freddie Highmore drama, but all signs at present suggest that this break will be very much worth it. After all, this upcoming February 18 episode (entitled “Risk and Reward”) was directed by Highmore and also features the debut of Daniel Dae Kim as Dr. Jackson Han — the new chief of surgery. Kim is an executive producer on the show and we’ve been waiting to see what sort of role he would play since we have been huge fans of his since we first saw him on Lost all those years ago.
At present, it remains to be seen how long Kim will be a part of the show — his role is described for now as an arc, but if successful, we do think that there is a strong case to be made for bringing him back at some point down the road.

Shaun’s blunt honesty with a distraught mother of a critically ill newborn baby causes the new chief of Surgery (Daniel Dae Kim) to question keeping him on as a resident.
Of course, we recognize that in some ways, we’ve been down this road before with Shaun Murphy — his autism makes it at times difficult to handle the more social aspects of being a doctor. Because of that, the higher-ups wonder whether or not he is right for the job. He is an exceptional doctor and surgeon — that much is clear. He also wants to be better at bedside manner, but doesn’t quite understand every single situation he’s put in. For someone like Dr. Han, who is just getting used to the staff at the St. Bonaventure Hospital, he probably doesn’t understand this in the way in which people more established do. We like to think that the more he would get to know Shaun, the more that he would be aware of all of the good that he brings to the table.
