Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show: Maroon 5, SpongeBob, & Travis Scott
There were also some other interesting questions to wonder, including precisely if there was going to be some sort of opportunity to see SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s a weird thing to think about, but there was talk entering the game tonight that they may honor an online petition and perform “Sweet Victory” — this is a song that hails from an early episode of the Nickelodeon show and it would be a nice tribute to the late show’s creator in Stephen Hillenburg.
We expected this to be entertaining at times, and then also, of course, polarizing at others. That’s the nature of many performances over the years with the game. Unfortunately, it was far messier than we thought it would be in advance.
Let’s go through the songs featured in this performance now — it started with Maroon 5 performing their first major hit in “Harder to Breathe” before then moving into “This Love.” Basically, this kicked off being all about their first album. Eventually, we saw a little bit of variety with Scott came out, and after that Adam Levine and company did their part to mix things up, as well. Big Boi eventually came out to perform his OutKast hit “I Love the Way You Move.”
We don’t have any real issue with Adam Levine musically, but it was a little bit weird that the flow of this entire show was a little bit off. The guests felt a little bit shoe-horned in, and you had Levine basically filling in for the likes of Andre 3000 and Drake at various points. Also, why did Adam Levine slowly disrobe throughout all of this?
The SpongeBob tribute
Well, this wasn’t what we were teased leading up to the show! We had a brief little visual homage to SpongeBob and the “Sweet Victory” moment, but that was pretty much it — and it was really random unless you knew about the petition online.
