What we’ve come to know about Tokio over time is rather simple: He’s one of the best musicians in the history of the entire franchise. He won Britain’s Got Talent by creating wonderful musical experiences. It wasn’t just about him playing the piano — it was about him also finding a way to deliver percussion, style, and atmosphere. He’s a little like a musical version of Kenichi Ebina in that he takes something that is very familiar and finds new ways to reinvent it. He thinks about his presentation in the same sort of way that Kenichi does.
Will we see Tokio actually move forward to the next round? We do love the sneak peek featuring him (via TVLine) below, but we also recognize that this is really no guarantee of anything when it comes to his future. Typically, pianists have not performed particularly well on America’s Got Talent, and many of the international acts have faced an up-and-down battle with this show. When it comes to past winners, we’ve often seen more or less the same thing. Whether it be Darci Lynne, Kenichi, or Ashleigh & Sully, we’ve seen a lot of winners not end up making it any further than their first performance — that does speak in some way to the overall competition of this show, but it does also say a few things in regards to the difficult (and flawed?) voting structure for this show. In only giving the superfans one act to put through (the other is selected via Golden Buzzer), there are going to be a lot of great acts who fall through the cracks.
While we are nervous about Tokio’s ability to move on to the next round, he’s one of our favorite acts in the history of the franchise. We’re thrilled that he even got to come over to America in the first place to showcase a little bit more of his talent.
