A Gossip Girl revival could actually happen!
Speaking to reporters today at the TCA winter press tour (per TVLine), network-programming Head Mark Pedowitz confirmed that they have at least discussed the idea of bringing the iconic show back on the air for more. However, it would be a decision that would be ultimately up to executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who were key to making the original show a success.
Could a new Gossip Girl in 2019 or 2020 be just as successful as the original? We do think that this is a show geared perfectly for a streaming era, where people can watch a number of episodes within a short span of time. The original Gossip Girl suffered because many viewers caught up on it long after it was over in some cases. It did have a core audience who loved to talk about it, but it was around a little bit before Twitter made it big as a platform for discussion. It almost seems like if the original had come on television today, it would have been even more of a hit.
In the end, it doesn’t seem like the network is at a point where they would be announcing a new version of Gossip Girl for the upcoming television season; yet, it’s clearly something worth keeping in mind for the future. Obviously, network executives still have the idea bouncing around in their mind, so it’s probably fair to assume that we should do roughly the same thing right now. It’s there as an idea, but there’s not enough substance as of yet to deliver it into something more. A new version of the show, after all, would likely need to feel very different.
