Homeland season 8 premiere date delayed, should air this fall
Speaking at the TCA Winter Press Tour today, Showtime made it clear that the final episodes of the Claire Danes series are now set to air this fall — months later than originally planned. What’s the reason for that? It has to do in part with the production commitments that come from working overseas. The final season will be primarily filmed in Morocco, with the country doubling for the Middle East. This is something that the series has done in the past, with it finding a way in which to replicate contentious parts of the world while also keeping the cast and crew safe.
The decision to end Homeland was not a quick one. While there were originally some indications out there that this could be the final one for the show, buzz followed after this that there could be a way to continue it. Ultimately, though, this seemed to be what showrunner Alex Gansa and Danes wanted — to end the show on a high note, and to end it at this particular point. We think that one of the challenges that come with ending a show like this is mostly just the difficulty that comes with letting go. This is a beloved series and one that brought Showtime a whole new level of prestige. It shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that Showtime would at least consider keeping it around for as long as they possibly can.
Eight seasons tend to be the length of which most premium-cable series go — Dexter and Weeds each lasted for eight years at Showtime, while Game of Thrones is ending over at HBO after season 8. The one outlier here is clearly Shameless, which is going into its tenth season thanks to a renewal that was announced earlier today. Even if Homeland is over, we do still think that its impact will be felt for a good long time moving forward. We certainly do think that there are going to be some other dramas inspired by the show, and other writers may look at the intelligence community differently. We just hope that for its final season Homeland really highlights the hard work and know-how of this particular group, especially at a time in which many of their skills are routinely questioned. They work hard in what is ultimately a thankless job.
