Shameless season 10 renewal confirmed; Cameron Monaghan returning

Shameless season 8

How about this for a double-dose of great Shameless news, courtesy of Showtime’s official TCA Winter Press Tour panel? This morning, the network confirmed that the series will be coming back for a tenth season and that Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher) will be returning in some capacity.

Let’s focus first on the renewal itself. The season 10 renewal does mean that Shameless is the first original scripted series from Showtime to make it to this point, and we think that this is a testament to some of the hard work of the cast, the crew, and of course the writers. It’s also a testament to this show’s streaming fandom, as binge-watching has made Shameless a huge hit a little bit later on in its run — it’s a bit of a television unicorn that way.

The uncertainty around a possible season 10 renewal stemmed mostly from the fact that original series star Emmy Rossum is leaving at the end of season 9, and that does still appear to be the case. No doubt that Shameless will miss her, given that we are talking about one of the show’s biggest stars. Yet, we do think one of the biggest things that it has going for it is its ensemble nature so it should be able to move forward and keep pace much like what happened on Vikings when it’s main star left in season 4. This is a show that has great stories across the board and there are some fun ones right now for Debbie, Carl, Lip, and of course Frank. So long as that continues, it will still be a lot of fun to watch.

The return of Monaghan definitely comes as a surprise, given the fact that so much was made of his original exit from the show. We know that he wanted to tackle some other projects (including Gotham) and he may still; it’s not clear just how often he will be around just yet in season 10, but Ian Gallagher is currently in prison and it’s hard to imagine them spending a ton of time on the character behind bars unless they just decide to tell some sort of elaborate story of Ian and Mickey trying to find their way within those walls.

New episodes of Shameless season 10 will air on Showtime starting this fall. There are still five more episodes to go in season 9, with the first one airing on February 10. You can preview that further over at the link here. Judging from where we are right now, the recovery of Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher could be at the top of the priority list.
