Is Vikings season 6 premiering on History earlier than expected?
In the tweet, the network makes it clear that the upcoming final season could be arriving “soon” — which of course sounds exciting before you remember that “soon” can be a fairly relative term. “Soon” can mean at some point a few months from now, or it could just mean later this year … though we personally interpret this to mean that the first part of the final season could be here before November. That’s when the past two batches of episodes have premiered.
Because of the show’s changing episode count over time and airing structure, Vikings is a very difficult show to predict sometimes in terms of when it’s coming on the air. It did feel like they’d established a pattern in airing episodes from November until January, but now they could be breaking it.
If there’s one major reason for the network to air the first part of season 6 a little bit sooner, it’s simply that the episodes will almost certainly be ready a little earlier than November. This show started filming season 6 all the way back in 2017, so there isn’t any reason to think that there are not some episodes more or less polished and ready to go. The only reason to wait at this point is in the event that History wants to stretch things out for the sake of having great ratings for as long as they possibly can, but eventually don’t they want to move onto some other things? One of the specific things that they can move on to is a spin-off or continuation of some sort, which we know to be in development (can it please be a Rollo spin-off???). We don’t expect the spin-off to be ready until 2020 at the earliest (if not later), but if it moves forward History doesn’t have to worry about hanging on to its current franchise for dear life. They know that there’s going to be a little bit more story down the road for them to tackle in this world and that will likely keep most of the Vikings fans on board.

Odds are, History will make a larger announcement on the future of Vikings a few months down the road. “Soon” is probably all you are going to get for now, since the schedule may still be subject to change.
