No doubt, Roger and Bree endured extensive pain throughout season 4, but they’re now in a very different spot for season 5. Suffice it to say, they may be more evolved versions of themselves and are prepared to take on the future and whatever it brings.
So is there anything still standing in their way? Is there something more that needs to be overcome? This is a show meant to unsettle you in some ways, but we don’t foresee any future obstacles for the two of them in a purely romantic sense. After Roger left Brianna in Wilmington, and after he took his time before deciding to come back, in this case, it’s hard to imagine him doing it again. While him not heading back to River Run immediately with Jamie and Claire was a polarizing decision, it was also a human one. This was him recognizing that he needed to do what was right for him at that moment, and that was to not take on a commitment until he knew for sure he could honor it. While there may still be obstacles (it makes sense that there would be for people who really haven’t spent that much time together), we don’t envision the two splitting apart in the way in which they have before.
So what will the two face off with now? For starters, there is the possibility that Stephen Bonnet is still out there, and he is a foe that both have an extensive, checkered history with. Brianna and Roger may be able to perceive Bonnet as gone for now, and that could offer them something resembling peace … but this peace may also be short-lived. There are also some other threats that cannot be ignored, including any resentment that Forbes may have over Brianna’s rejection, their inexperience living within this particular timeline, and whatever sort of perception change comes out of Brianna and Lord John Grey not being engaged to be married anymore. Maybe the latter few don’t put lives on the line or open emotional wounds quite like Bonnet, but they are still worth noting and are a part of this world.
As we’ve seen with Jamie and Claire in season 4, the strength of Outlander comes in how there can be conflict without the will-they-or-won’t-they hype. Hopefully, this is where season 5 is now going for Roger and Bree.
