The Masked Singer season 2 renewal confirmed at Fox

The Masked Singer

The Masked Singer will keep on singing for at least another season. Today, Fox confirmed that they have renewed the runaway hit of the year, which clearly should not be a shock to anyone out there.

When the network first announced that they were picking up a version of the smash Korean hit, there was immediate a question or two as to whether or not this could work in America. This is a show that is certainly quirky, but it’s delivered incredible ratings through the first four episodes. The format does need some work — the clues are far too obvious in the internet age, and we wish that the premise was geared more towards the singing than the actual guess-game. Nonetheless, we appreciate that the format is stateside and getting more attention. Maybe this will actually bring some more attention to the Korean version.

As for the future of the show’s on-air talent, nothing is official — Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, and Nicole Scherzinger are a part of the panel this year, with Nick Cannon serving as the emcee. We do think Cannon should stick around, and for the most part, we have no major issues with the judges — they’re in a tough position since they have to keep throwing out guesses, even if it starts to become obvious to them who someone is. (They’ve been able to suss out two of the first four performers in the Deer and also the Pineapple — they probably would’ve also gotten the Hippo if he was around a little bit longer.) If we had to make a change somewhere, we’d consider either adding Joel McHale to the panel or replacing Thicke with him, given that he was fantastic over the past couple of episodes he’s appeared on.

The larger question we wonder now is when Fox wants to bring The Masked Singer back. The ratings are so good that they may opt to try to air a summer cycle or something to keep viewers engaged in the format. The one thing that we’d caution them on is doing too much of the show since you want it to feel like an event. We’re fine if we have to wait until the winter to see it back on the air again.
