Today, the network confirmed that they are going ahead and green-lighting more of what may very well be the feel-good story of the 2018-19 television season. Sure, it’s in part because of the series’ subject matter — which is about having faith in your fellow man and making a positive impact on the world. While religion is a part of the series, it’s not focused so much on spreading the gospel and can be enjoyed by anyone. It’s also a feel-good story because it wasn’t necessarily heralded as the most big-ticket show on the schedule this past fall — its biggest star is arguably Joe Morton coming off of his time on Scandal, but even with him he’s probably referred to more in the streets as “Papa Pope” than by his actual name. Hall’s most-notable TV credit before this was The Mayor, while Violett Beane recurred on The Flash as superhero Jesse Quick.

In a statement confirming the renewal news, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl had the following to say:

“We’re thrilled with how God Friended Me has performed on Sundays … It’s one of the top three new series on television, has improved its time period significantly, and continues a long tradition of prestige dramas for CBS on the night.”

God Friended Me has done a rather-exceptional job as of late of drawing great viewership, especially among total viewers over the past several months. While it was buoyed in some weeks by the NFL and 60 Minutes airing before it, it has shown some stability in the weeks in which there was no football on the air at all. This is a show with legitimate potential to only get stronger once more viewers discover how great this show is, as we think that there are a number of possible fans out there who just don’t know that it exists. We’ll see what a summer of streaming could bring to it when it returns for its second season, presumably in the fall.

Technically, we should make it clear that God Friended Me is not said and done just yet when it comes to its season 1 run on CBS, either. The next new episode is airing in mid-February, and it will feature a guest appearance from Yankees great CC Sabathia. You can read a little bit more on that by visiting the link here.
